Journaling, Ugh

That’s the way I felt about journaling for so much of my life. I didn’t like it. I wasn’t good at it or consistent enough to be of any value to me. Thanks to the encouragement of John Eldredge and the work of the Holy Spirit, that shifted a couple of years ago. I am grateful for the sporadic entries in my journal along the way because they are like trail markers for me. They stand as a memorial to God’s love and grace in my life.

So, Joshua called together the twelve men he had chosen—one from each of the tribes of Israel. He told them, “Go into the middle of the Jordan, in front of the Ark of the Lord your God. Each of you must pick up one stone and carry it out on your shoulder—twelve stones in all, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future your children will ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Then you can tell them, ‘They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant went across.’ These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.”

Journaling is a great way for you to set up these kinds of markers for your life as well. You never know when you might need a word of encouragement from your own hand to remind you that God has been, is, and always will be with you.

In addition, you never know when God might need you to share your journey with others as well. If you don’t make a record of some sort, many of your fondest experiences will be lost to memory, and in time that too, will fade.
